Who are they? Where did they come from? A messed-up e-mail and the word Pizza Express are the only clues.

The de Groot's Page

David de Groot of Brisbane, Australia took one look at the pizzas on this site, rolled up his sleeves and got creative! His first effort won a respectable 8/10 and his second got a perfect score! We can't wait to see what else he comes up with...

handsome and tasty
So no sooner had I sat down to post an update with may latest Christmas creation when an email came in from Australia:
So not to be outdone by my fellow Brisbane pizza makers, I whipped up another Happy Happy Pizza tonight.

Homemade base; tomato paste (store bought); mushroom and bacon hair; salami eyes, eyebrows, ears and mouth; olive eye and mouth detail. And cheese, of course.
The message was from none other than David de Groot who, as you may recall, was the artist behind the famous fungus face who earned a not-too-shabby 8/10.

I nearly dropped my slice of pizza in excitement and quickly clicked the link to see what David came up with and as you can see by the photos above he managed to design a handsome yet tasty-looking face with a bit of extra character.

Notice how despite the fact that the cheese is well-browned and the facial features totally shifted during baking that the face retains it's overall character and expression. All of that plus a homemade base earns "Handsome & Tasty" a much-coveted 10/10!!! Congratulations!

I've been asked a lot of weird questions about this site. Generally people either "get it" or they don't. David definitely does, as you can tell from his description on flickr:
So I made pizzas for dinner tonight and just couldn't not make a happy happy pizza.

See? That's what it's all about. A bit of fun, a bit of art, and some tasty results!

Some perspective on the situation Australia has become a real hotbed of pizza creativity. First we had bugeyes, then a couple of pizzas from jane.b. Now I've just recieved a follow-up from the buyeye people and now this fellow has sent in an excellent example of happy artistry.

I just received this grinning guy from David de Groot of Cedar Creek, Australia. David was inspired by jane.b's recent efforts and decided to try his own hand at the happy happy culinary craft.

bacon hair and a mushroom goatee, how handsome!
After seeing how little Jane.b (whom I've personally met, charming lass btw, keen photographer too) did so well with her Happy Happy Pizza, I decided to do one myself.
...
Simple but effective, and the children enjoyed it immensely.

I'm sure they did! Looks like a storebought crust with standard tomato sauce and mozzarella for a base, bacon hair, mushroom nose, ears and goatee, red pepper smile and salami and black olive eyes. Great choice of ingredients, although the mushroom can be kind of risky since it can go nasty during the baking process. However it appears that David was able to pull it off! Even the heavy cheese browning on the edges doesn't detract from the expression on this charming fella.

It's getting tougher and tougher to judge these things. I'm thinking the time is coming to add a pizza poll to the web site so you guys can cast your own votes. In the meantime I must come up with a verdict. I was going to go with a 5 or 6 out of 10... but those little half-olive eyebrows say, "Yo, baby, what do you think of my cool bacon hair? Am I cute or what?!" The charm and inspiration, not to mention the goatee, earns this pizza an extra mark so I'm giving this one an 8/10.

Thanks for sending this in, David! Well done!

A Quick Slice In Utica, New York, a type of pizza called tomato pie is common. This type of pizza is usually served cold, and is topped only with a light layer of Pecorino Romano cheese.
